In 1946 startte de Braziliaanse psychiater Nise da Silveira in Rio de Janeiro de afdeling Activiteitentherapie aan het Centro Psiquiátrico Nacional. In een tijd waarin behandelmethoden als elektro-convulsietherapie, lobotomie en insulineshocktherapie gangbaar waren, geloofde Da Silveira dat psychiatrisch patiënten geholpen worden door hun verdriet te uiten in plaats van het te verdoven.

In 1946, the Brazilian psychiatrist Nise da Silveira started the Occupational Therapy Ward at the Centro Psiquiátrico Nacional in Rio de Janeiro. In a time when psychiatric treatment methods such as electroshock, lobotomy, and insulin coma were conventional, she believed that in order to help patients, they should be allowed to express their grief, not be numbed.

Haar creatieve activiteiten bleken een krachtig middel om patiënten met schizofrenie te kalmeren en gaven tegelijkertijd toegang tot hun innerlijke belevingswereld. De vele tekeningen van circulaire vormen die de patiënten maakten – van complexe tot harmonieuze structuren – intrigeerden Da Silveira. Ze stuurde er een aantal op naar de beroemde psychiater Carl Gustav Jung. Hij zag in deze mandala’s een bevestiging van zijn theorie van de universele symbolentaal. Ook kunstcritici waren onder de indruk van hun kwaliteit. Door de jaren heen groeide de zeldzame verzameling uit tot een collectie met ca. 400.000 werken die wordt gerekend tot beschermd Braziliaans erfgoed.
KUNSTENAARS
De tentoonstelling Images from the Unconscious toont een selectie kunstwerken uit deze bijzondere collectie. Van Adelina Gomes, Carlos Pertuis en Fernando Diniz, die elk bijna een halve eeuw met Nise da Silveira werkten, zijn onder meer neolithische sculpturen, een reeks geschilderde bloemtransformaties, met waskrijt vervaardigde zonneschilderijen en de door Jung bezongen mandalatekeningen te zien.

Her creative activities proved to be a powerful means both to calm schizophrenics and access their inner worlds. The drawings of circular forms they made —some complex, others showing harmonious structures – intrigued Da Silveira. She sent some samples to the famous psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung. He saw in these mandalas a confirmation of his theory of the universal language of symbols. Art critics were also impressed by their quality. Over the years, the rare collection grew to approximately 400,000 works and is officially recognized as artistic Brazilian heritage.
